Before the flight, you may have some free time in Kathmandu depending on the schedule. You can take a short walk around Thamel, visit the peaceful Garden of Dreams, or simply rest before the remote trek ahead.
The flight to Nepalgunj takes you from the hills of central Nepal towards the warmer Terai plains near the Indian border. The contrast between Kathmandu and Nepalgunj is noticeable, and the journey gives you a glimpse of the geographical diversity of Nepal.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and prepare for the early flight to Juphal the following morning.
Flight duration: Approximately 1 hour
Accommodation: Hotel in Nepalgunj
Meals: Breakfast
An early morning flight takes us from Nepalgunj to Juphal (approximately 2,500m), the main air gateway to the Dolpo region.
After landing at Juphal Airport, the trek officially begins. The trail follows the landscape above the Thuli Bheri Valley, passing agricultural fields and traditional villages before gradually descending towards the river.
We continue through Kalagaonda and along the southern bank of the Bheri River. En route, you can see traditional village life and a traditional water mill at Roop Ghar.
The trail eventually brings us to Dunai (approximately 2,140m), the administrative center and main settlement of the Dolpo region.
This first trekking day is relatively short and gives you time to settle into the rhythm of walking in western Nepal.
Flight duration: Approximately 30–35 minutes
Trekking time: Approximately 3 hours
Accommodation: Tea house/lodge in Dunai
After breakfast, we cross the bridge over the Bheri River and follow the trail towards Sulighat, the gateway to Shey Phoksundo National Park.
From Sulighat, the trail enters the Suli Gad valley and continues through increasingly rugged landscapes. The path passes through forests of walnut, maple and other Himalayan vegetation, while prayer flags, waterfalls and traditional settlements begin to reflect the distinct culture of Dolpo.
We pass through Kageni and Shyanta before continuing towards Chhepka (approximately 2,680m).
As we move deeper into the valley, the environment becomes quieter and more remote. This is where the character of the Phoksundo Lake Trek really begins to unfold.
Trekking time: Approximately 6–7 hours
Accommodation: Tea house
Today's trail takes us deeper into the wilderness of Shey Phoksundo National Park.
We leave Chhepka and follow the trail through beautiful forest, gradually gaining altitude. The route passes through areas traditionally used as seasonal settlements by the people of Ringmo.
As the trail climbs higher, the forest begins to open into a more alpine landscape. Our destination is Jharana Waterfall, a spectacular natural feature cascading down the mountainside.
From the trail, you can also get your first distant views towards Phoksundo Lake, building anticipation for one of the major highlights of the trek.
Trekking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Camp/lodge depending on local availability.
Today is one of the most rewarding days of the entire trek.
The trail continues through birch forests and follows the upper reaches of the Phoksundo River. After crossing the river, the landscape opens towards Ringmo Village, a beautiful traditional settlement influenced by Tibetan culture.
From Ringmo, we continue towards the magnificent Phoksundo Lake, located at approximately 3,611 meters.
The first sight of the lake is unforgettable. Its deep turquoise and blue waters contrast dramatically with the surrounding cliffs, forests and barren mountain slopes.
Phoksundo is not only a natural landmark but also a sacred place for the local Buddhist and Bon communities. The surrounding area is rich in religious traditions, ancient monasteries and stories that have been passed down through generations.
Trekking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Accommodation: Tea house/lodge in Ringmo
Today is reserved for exploring the magnificent Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo Valley.
After breakfast, take time to walk around Ringmo and explore the traditional houses, mani walls, prayer flags and surrounding landscapes.
We then visit Tshowa Gompa, an ancient Bon monastery located above Phoksundo Lake. The monastery and surrounding landscape provide an insight into the spiritual traditions that make Dolpo so culturally distinctive.
Later, descend towards the lake and spend time enjoying its extraordinary scenery. Depending on local conditions and the group's preference, there is also an opportunity to explore nearby viewpoints and trails around the lake.
The combination of turquoise water, dramatic cliffs and surrounding Himalayan wilderness makes Phoksundo one of the most memorable destinations in western Nepal.
Accommodation: Tea house/lodge in Ringmo
After breakfast, we begin retracing our route towards Chhepka.
The trail follows the Suli Gad River, gradually descending through forests and remote sections of the national park. We pass through Renje and continue along the river valley before eventually reaching Chhepka.
Although you are following a familiar route, the scenery can look completely different from the perspective of the return journey.
Trekking time: Approximately 6–7 hours
